WVU Hospitals and School of Pharmacy Residency Program

Teaching

Upon successful completion of the PGY-1 pharmacy residency program, the resident will have developed competency in teaching and training healthcare professionals, pharmacy students and patients.

Residents at West Virginia University Hospitals will have teaching responsibilities at the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy. The hospital is directly affiliated with the WVU School of Pharmacy and serves as the primary teaching site for many of the academic experiences available to the residents. The resident will have a choice of various teaching experiences over the course of the year. Residents may be involved in facilitating group discussions, participating in practice laboratory, and evaluating students in integrated patient management modules. Teaching assignments will be determined at scheduling sessions, which are held before the fall and spring semesters. Furthermore, the resident may have some precepting and mentoring responsibilities for entry-level Pharm.D. students on experiential rotations.

Pharmaceutical Care Labs
Residents will be required to complete a minimum of two labs (two sessions each) each semester. The resident should attempt to not teach more than one lab during a given rotation.

Patient Education
Training in patient education skills will be satisfied through:

1. Direct involvement in patient discharge counseling regarding home medication regimen during selected clinical rotations within the hospital.
2. Patient counseling in the ambulatory clinic will involve hands-on experience, discussing with patients disease and drug therapy, monitoring and adjusting drug therapy regimens.

Continuing Education Presentation
The goal of the continuing education presentations is to enhance the participant’s knowledge regarding the use of drug therapy to treat and prevent disease. Participants will learn to evaluate the scientific literature and discuss its applicability to clinical practice. Participants will learn to present complex concepts and scientific data in a clear and concise manner.

The audience will consist of pharmacy residents, faculty, pharmacy practitioners, pharmacy students, pharmacy technicians, and invited guests. Presentations will be formal in nature and audience members will refrain from asking questions during the presentation (except to ask brief points of clarification).

Two presentations will be scheduled on each date (morning/afternoon). Each presentation must be 50 minutes in duration and the presenter must use audiovisual aids (i.e. slides, video) during the presentation. All members of the audience will evaluate each presentation using a standardized assessment instrument. Residents are encouraged to work with content experts/mentors for each presentation.

IPPE Program
This acute care experience consists of two site visits to Ruby Memorial Hospital by P-3 students from the WVU School of Pharmacy, with a pharmacy resident as the facilitator. During the visits, student pairs are assigned a patient’s chart to review. The students are required to collect specific patient data, develop a comprehensive problem list and patient care plan with the available data, and ultimately present this information to a faculty facilitator. The utilization of pertinent clinical practice guidelines in the development of patient care plans are a required component of this presentation. Student evaluations are based on their data collection forms, patient care plan, and presentation.
