The PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency at West Virginia University Hospitals provides the resident with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to become a competent practitioner.
The program is a twelve-month, postgraduate training experience composed of four major elements:
- Acute care
- Ambulatory care
- Drug Use Policy
- Practice Management
The program varies for each resident based upon his or her goals, interests and previous experience. In accordance with current ASHP standards, all residents are required to complete rotations in six core subject areas considered to be essential to the practice of pharmacy. Four elective rotations are also scheduled to permit the resident flexibility in pursuing individual goals.
Additional learning experiences include the development and completion of a practice-related research project, development of oral and written communication skills through the completion of a Medication-Use Evaluation and ACPE Accredited Continuing Education Presentation, patient education, participation in various departmental committees, and practice in various pharmacy areas through out the institution. Upon successful completion of the pharmacy residency training program, trainees are awarded a residency certificate.
Fringe Benefits: Comprehensive flexible benefits packages including medical, dental, vision, life and disability. In addition, the residents receive paid days off, paid holidays, and financial support for travel to professional and educational programs and professional society meetings.
